As I mentioned back on my personal site, the continuation and evolution of the What’s New in Edge Rails series continues here as EdgeRails.info. I’ve long wanted to give the Edge Rails series it’s own dedicated site and have finally pulled my act together to get this party started. But, rather than just continue publishing my soliloquies under a new domain, I wanted to alter the direction and expand the site to accept direct input and contributions from the community. I feel like this mirrors the growth of the Rails framework itself, growing from a single person into a much more communit. […]

On Jan. 27 Oracle announced it had finalized its acquisition of Sun. In doing so it adds a number of open source darlings to its portfolio, MySQL, Java and VirtualBox to mention just a few. Now that Oracle has acquired VirtualBox, what does this mean for the virtualization market? Sponsor No time has been wasted in rebranding the Sun websites and products that now come under the Oracle umbrella. Most notably the MySQL website totally separates the MySQL’s commercial arm from the community site. And unsurprisingly, the Sun website redirects entirely to Oracle’s home page. The reworking of the V. […]

“One defends when his strength is inadequate, he attacks when it is abundant.”—Sun Tzu, The Art of War The Apple iPad isn’t even available yet, but already it is forcing Amazon to respond in a variety of ways to protect its competing Kindle eBook business. Amazon just snapped up a touchscreen technology startup, presumably to update the already ancient-looking Kindle. Emboldened book publishers are pushing back on Amazon’s $9.99 pricing now that they can sell the same eBooks on the iPad for $14.99, and Amazon is capitulating. And the Kindle team at Amazon, which once had an arrogant. […]

With Rails 3 on it’s way to release, and all it is bringing in terms of features and refactorization, some might be wondering, is it a “game changer”?

By ceefour of AdaRuby 1 day ago. Compare with how to do the same in Ruby on Rails: # app/views/jobs/show_success.html.erb <% content_for :title do %> <%= @job.company %> is looking for a <%= @job.position %> <!– or: <%= "#{@job.company} is looking for a #{@job.position}" %> –> <% end %> It might be a simple example , but that begs your gratefulness even more : Imagine coding a much more complex web application ! I certainly won't blame it on Symfony. Its developers … Topics: PHP, Ruby on Rails, Ruby, Symfony, WordPress How Software is Bu. […]

1. So, Facebook went and secretly rewrote PHP’s runtime to be a lean, mean, C++ translated, g++ compiled piece of resource-friendly hotness. If that sentence confused you, then you’re not the target audience for this post. We want to know what our developer friends think of HipHop, the latest open-source code project to emerge from the deep, dark dungeons of Facebook’s Palo Alto headquarters (ok, the HQ’s actually quite pretty, but we like a good turn of phrase). Read these expert opinions (and by « expert, » we mean Rasmus Lerdorf), and let us know in the comments what you think of the new PHP run. […]

Managing software packages on Unix has always been, to put it politely, a giant pain, and most Linux distributions are built around the different ways we’ve all been trying to alleviate that pain. In this post, I’ll walk you through Homebrew, a fantastic new option for package management made simple. Pre-Homebrew, there were various attempts to create effective package managers for OS X. The two most popular efforts were Fink and MacPorts, but they each had their frustrations. In both cases, creating packages or portfiles was still complex and difficult. Max Howell’s done a great job wi. […]

One of the key values at Facebook is to move fast. For the past six years, we have been able to accomplish a lot thanks to rapid pace of development that PHP offers. As a programming language, PHP is simple. Simple to learn, simple to write, simple to read, and simple to debug. We are able to get new engineers ramped up at Facebook a lot faster with PHP than with other languages, which allows us to innovate faster. Today I’m excited to share the project a small team of amazing people and I have been working on for the past two years; HipHop for PHP. With HipHop we’ve reduced the CPU usage on o. […]

The new validation methods in Rails 3.0 have been extracted out to Active Model, but in the process have been sprinkled with DRY goodness…

1. Being able to create lists Nothing says I know what I’m doing like creating a list of 10-25 items that are mostly bullshit. 2. Arguing on the Internet It is sad stereotype. But arguing on the Internet is valid skill. And no one knows right like you do. 3. Reading RSS feeds Why create stuff when you can read about stuff instead? 4. Creating another useless project Of course we need another test framework in ruby. Get to hacking. 5. As developers we toss around quite a few acronyms. Most of them are positive like, TLA, REST, and TATFT. And of course there are few of them which are not so good, like NIH. Today, I propose a new acronym for the not-so-good list: ISTR or I’m Smarter Than Rails. We developers like to think of our self as an intrinsically smart bunch. Well of course we are! We create web sites and applications out of funny spelled words and esoteric symbols. We can be smart within the confines of frameworks, or we can be smarter than our frameworks. But be careful, being smarter than our frameworks will only. […]
